Woman's 84-Mile Hadrian's Wall Walk Honors Late Father After 7-Stone Loss
A 31-year-old woman from Abercarn is gearing up for an inspiring 84-mile trek along Hadrian's Wall this August, celebrating a remarkable seven-stone weight loss and a heartfelt mission to pay tribute to her late father. Carla Jefferies will undertake the challenging coast-to-coast walk in memory of her dad, who passed away from cancer, turning her personal transformation into a powerful fundraising effort for St David's Hospice Care.
From Sceptic to Supporter: A Journey of Transformation
Carla's journey marks the culmination of a year-long health overhaul, where she embraced long-distance walking, yoga, and pole fitness to transform her well-being. She openly admits that before this fitness journey, she struggled to walk even a single mile, making her upcoming adventure a testament to her dedication and resilience.
"I used to be a sceptic when it came to charities," Carla shared. "But seeing the incredible care St David's provided to my Dad first-hand changed that completely. The compassion, kindness, and support he received during his palliative care was truly outstanding - and I want to help ensure other families experience that same reassurance."
A Birthday Tribute with Deep Personal Meaning
The walk is scheduled to conclude on August 31, which coincides with Carla's 32nd birthday, adding an extra layer of significance to the challenge. Her father, whom she fondly remembers as her "cheeky personal trainer," always playfully encouraged her to stick to her health goals. Even during his hospital stays, he would waggle a finger at her if she sneaked an off-plan snack, a memory that now fuels her determination.
Now, Carla channels that playful encouragement into every mile of the ancient Roman frontier, planning to complete the route over five to seven days while tackling blisters and steep terrain. Her goal is to support St David's Hospice Care in managing the emotional, spiritual, and social needs of those facing life-limiting illnesses.
Stepping Forward for a Cause Close to Her Heart
"Every step I take along the Wall will be for Dad - and for everyone who needs the amazing support St David's provides," she said. "He was behind me every step of the way, and now I'm moving forward for him, one slightly wobbly, very sore step at a time."
Carla is actively documenting her training journey and hopes to raise vital funds for St David's Hospice Care, which serves Gwent and South Powys. Her story highlights not only a personal achievement in health and fitness but also a profound commitment to giving back in honor of her father's legacy.
