Worcester single mum gets debt help on Rich House Poor House

A single mother from Worcester, overwhelmed by debt, received a lifeline from a millionaire couple after appearing on Channel 5's popular show Rich House Poor House.

Michelle's story

Michelle, a carer for her autistic non-verbal son Toby, lives with her daughter Nellie and mother-in-law Sue in a three-bedroom semi-detached home in Worcester. Sue works in a shoe shop, and after bills, the family has just £147 per week. Michelle dreams of establishing a foundation for children with special needs, named the Nigel Prosser Foundation in memory of Sue's late partner, but financial struggles have put this on hold.

The house swap

Michelle and her family swapped homes with property moguls Rick and Lorraine Gannon, who live in a £1.5 million mansion with a gym and snooker room. The Gannons have a son, Ben, who has quadriplegic cerebral palsy and requires a specially adapted home. During the swap, the Gannons faced challenges adapting to a smaller, non-adapted house, while Michelle enjoyed a budget of £2,000 per week, treating her children to a safari park trip.

Life-changing support

At the end of the swap, Rick and Lorraine surprised Michelle by pledging to support her foundation legally and through social media, and Rick agreed to clear her outstanding debts. A tearful Michelle said, "Thank you. I'm so gobsmacked. You have no idea how big this is for us and how it can change our lives. And we're going to work our socks off. I'm not afraid of hard work."

The episode highlighted the challenges faced by families caring for children with disabilities and the impact of financial generosity. Rich House Poor House is available to stream on Channel 5.
