Solihull's Chelmsley Wood to Receive £20 Million Community-Led Investment

One of the most deprived areas in Solihull is set to benefit from a substantial £20 million funding injection, with the local community empowered to decide exactly how the money will be spent. The Chelmsley Wood East area has been selected as a beneficiary of the UK government's Pride in Place initiative, which allocates up to £5 billion across nearly 250 regions nationwide.

Community Board to Oversee Funding Allocation

At a recent Solihull Council cabinet meeting, senior councillors discussed the funding and agreed that the authority will appoint an independent chairperson. This chairperson will lead a neighbourhood board comprising residents and workers from Chelmsley Wood, tasked with overseeing the allocation of the £20 million. The board is expected to be established before July, with a detailed plan for the funds to follow.

The funding could be directed towards various community enhancement projects, such as improving public spaces with better lighting, installing benches, or commissioning public art installations. This approach aims to ensure the investment directly addresses local needs and priorities.

Political Reactions and Community Focus

Green Party opposition leader Councillor Max McLoughlin welcomed the funding but urged caution, noting that "£20 million over 10 years might not do as much as people are maybe hoping." He also questioned whether board membership could be expanded beyond the requirement for one ward councillor.

In response, Conservative Council Leader Councillor Karen Grinsell emphasized that the process must be "very much community-led," with decisions made by people from the Chelmsley Wood area. Deputy Leader Councillor Ian Courts added, "This is a tremendous opportunity for local residents to get involved."

Council Support and Implementation

Senior councillors have agreed to act as the local accountable body for the programme, facilitating the appointment of the independent chairperson and approving board nominations. Following the meeting, Councillor Grinsell reiterated the council's supportive role, stating, "The council will be helping to implement it but really we will just be supporting people in Chelmsley to do what they think is best with the money."

She expressed delight at the investment, highlighting Chelmsley Wood's tight-knit community and the potential for significant benefits when spending is decided locally to maximize impact for all residents.
