UK Community Spirit Under Strain as Funding Crisis Threatens Local Projects

New research from Selco Builders Warehouse paints a concerning picture of communities across Britain facing significant challenges. A survey of 2,000 Brits reveals that nearly half, 48 per cent, report the disappearance of community spaces and charities in their areas. Furthermore, a third of respondents, 33 per cent, describe their community as "struggling," with 31 per cent believing their local area has worsened over the past five years.

Overwhelming Support for Community Initiatives

Despite these troubling trends, the appetite for positive change remains strong. An overwhelming 85 per cent of Brits assert that community projects make a real difference to people's lives. Additionally, 83 per cent state that increased funding would make them feel more hopeful about the future of where they live. However, grassroots initiatives are being held back by significant barriers.

Four in five people, 79 per cent, cite a lack of funding as a major struggle for local projects, while three-quarters, 75 per cent, believe the individuals behind these efforts do not receive the recognition they deserve. This highlights a critical gap between public support and practical resources.

Selco Launches Community Heroes Campaign

To address this funding shortfall, Selco Builders Warehouse has partnered with TV tradesperson Rob Bent to launch its Community Heroes campaign. This initiative features a £62,000 funding pot designed to support local charities, clubs, and groups that hold communities together. The campaign aims to celebrate unsung heroes and provide them with the necessary tools, materials, and funding to enhance their impact.

Running since 2021, the Community Heroes program has already distributed thousands of pounds to worthy causes. In 2025 alone, £57,500 was allocated to local projects, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to strengthening neighbourhoods.

Rob Bent Voices Support for Grassroots Efforts

Supporting the campaign, Rob Bent emphasized the vital role of community projects. He stated, "Community projects are the heartbeat of local areas. They bring us together and make a real difference, but too often run on passion alone. Grassroots initiatives often lack the support they deserve, so I'm excited to be partnering with Selco to recognise those going above and beyond."

Bent added, "I'm proud to support the Community Heroes campaign and can't wait to see the impact it has across the country." His involvement underscores the importance of tradespeople in community development, with research showing that 76 per cent of Brits believe local tradespeople play a crucial role in laying the foundations for stronger communities.

How the Community Heroes Fund Works

The Community Heroes fund is open to any community group, club, or charity that could benefit from building supplies or funding to improve their local area. The selection process involves monthly awards, with one winner chosen by Rob Bent and a Selco panel each month. Winners receive £2,000 worth of building supplies to spend at their local Selco store, along with a place in the final vote. Two runners-up also receive £1,000 worth of supplies each.

At the end of the year, all monthly winners will advance to a public vote. The top prize is £15,000, with second and third place receiving £10,000 and £5,000, respectively. This structure aims to maximize support and engagement for community projects nationwide.

Applications Now Open for Funding

Applications for the Community Heroes fund are currently open, with groups encouraged to apply or nominate a local cause deserving of support. The deadline for entries is November 30, and the overall winner will be announced in January 2027. Through this initiative, Selco hopes to make a tangible impact on the development of small community projects, fostering brighter futures for local areas across the UK.

This campaign responds directly to public sentiment, as 83 per cent of people believe increased funding for local projects would boost hope for their area's future. By providing essential resources, Selco aims to strengthen communities and address the pressing issues highlighted in their research.
