1897 Group Seeks New Talks with Aston Villa Amid North Stand Closure
1897 Group Seeks Talks with Aston Villa Over Atmosphere

The 1897 Group, a fan-led initiative aimed at improving the atmosphere at Villa Park, has expressed its desire to hold further discussions with Aston Villa regarding future collaboration. This comes despite the impending closure of the North Stand for the 2025/26 season, which will reduce the stadium's capacity to approximately 37,000.

Background of the Initiative

During the final few home league fixtures of the 2024/25 season, Aston Villa's football department implemented several initiatives to amplify noise across the stadium. The 1897 Group was subsequently allocated a section of the lower North Stand to serve as a designated singing area, positioned opposite the Holte End, to encourage vocal support throughout the ground.

In March, manager Unai Emery commented on the singing section, stating: "Firstly, we have to transmit to them our energy and wishes, our attitude, skills, and try to connect with them. But that starts from us - from our side. Then, we need our supporters. We need Villa Park. Not just 'Super John McGinn', but there is 'Super Aston Villa'."

Impact of the North Stand Closure

The closure of the North Stand for redevelopment means the 1897 Group will no longer have a dedicated area within the stadium from which to generate atmosphere. The group acknowledges the challenge this poses for the club in allocating a specific section for its members but remains committed to working closely with Aston Villa to enhance the matchday experience wherever possible.

Previous Contributions

The 1897 Group has been instrumental in producing pre-match displays for European fixtures and laying scarves across supporters' seats. Notably, the Remembrance Sunday display in November 2024 was created in partnership with the Military Lions. During Villa's 2024/25 FA Cup run, the group raised over £750 in less than 24 hours to produce a banner paying tribute to Peter Whittingham ahead of the fifth-round tie against Cardiff City. The campaign exceeded its target, with surplus donations totalling £461.29 donated to the Peter Whittingham Foundation, which supports children and young people across the UK.

Looking Ahead

The group understands the logistical difficulties the club faces but is optimistic about continuing collaboration. A spokesperson for the 1897 Group said, "We hope to maintain a strong partnership with the club to ensure Villa Park remains an intimidating fortress for opponents, even during the transition period." The club has not yet commented on the group's request for further talks.
