A big-hearted barber from Birmingham has partnered with his former school to offer free haircuts to students from low-income families, easing financial pressures and building self-esteem.
Barber Reconnects with Former School
Carlton Johnson, a barber at Fresh Cuts Barbershop in Birmingham, reached out to his alma mater, St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School, after learning about the challenges some families face. He now visits the school every two weeks to provide complimentary haircuts to students who might otherwise go without.
Johnson said: 'I remember what it was like growing up and not always having the money for a haircut. A fresh cut can make a huge difference to a child's confidence, and I want to give back to the community that shaped me.'
Impact on Students and Families
The initiative has been warmly welcomed by the school community. Headteacher Mary Ryan commented: 'Carlton's generosity is remarkable. For some families, the cost of a haircut can be a real burden, especially with multiple children. This service ensures our students look and feel their best without added financial stress.'
Since the programme began in September, over 30 students have received free haircuts. The school estimates that each haircut saves families around £15, totalling over £450 in savings so far this academic year.
Community Support and Future Plans
Johnson's efforts have inspired other local businesses to offer support. A nearby supermarket has donated hair products, and a local café provides refreshments on haircut days. Johnson hopes to expand the scheme to other schools in Birmingham.
'I want every child to feel good about themselves, regardless of their background,' Johnson added. 'If we can get more barbers involved, we can make a real difference across the city.'
