Birmingham chip shop boss urges 'grow up' before protest

A Birmingham takeaway owner urged people who are 'causing hate' to 'grow up' ahead of a planned Far Right protest in Birmingham. Hot Spot is a popular takeaway in Billesley, known for owner Nassar Iqbal (Uncle Nas) and his social media videos.

After previously criticising Donald Trump in March, Iqbal seemed to reference the divisive reaction to the Henry Nowak murder, which has been cited as one of the reasons behind a Far Right protest in Birmingham on Saturday.

Background of the case

In December, 18-year-old student Henry Nowak was fatally stabbed by Vickrum Singh Digwa, a Sikh man, who falsely accused Nowak of assault and racism. Earlier this month, protesters gathered outside Southampton Central Police Station, and violence broke out miles from Digwa's family home. Digwa was jailed for a minimum term of 21 years.

Community reaction

In Smethwick, Jatinder Singh, president of Guru Nanak Gurdwara, said the Sikh community 'strongly condemns the murder of Henry Nowak,' adding that members feel as though they are 'on trial.' Weeks after the protest, Iqbal took to social media outside his takeaway, urging the public 'to have love in the community, not hate.'

In his video, Nassar Iqbal said: 'People like that should be locked up, we don't need people like that. You can't say it was a Sikh person who committed that crime and say all Sikhs are the same. When a Muslim commits a crime, not all Muslims are the same. Same with other ethnics and minorities as well. The people who are causing hate between everyone, come on. Grow up. We don't need this. England is multicultural. We all live together so we don't need all this hate, saying 'the Sikhs have done this' and 'the Muslims have done this.' Come on, it's 2026. We don't need this. Have love in the community, not hate.'

Hot Spot is located at 604-606 Yardley Wood Rd, Birmingham B13 0HW.
