Craft and Friendship Group Transforms Lives in Cardiff
Craft and Friendship Group Transforms Lives in Cardiff

A creative community group is helping to transform lives in Cardiff through the power of friendship and craft. The Salvation Army has launched a thriving programme at the newly refurbished community room in the Cardiff Bay Asda. What started as a simple idea has blossomed into a warm space where more than 20 people of all ages and backgrounds now gather.

Weekly Sessions

The Knit, Crochet and Natter Café opens its doors every Monday from 11am to 1pm. To make sure everyone can join in, a second group now meets on Thursday evenings at The Salvation Army Hall in Grangetown.

Community Impact

Anne Smith from The Salvation Army has seen first-hand how much these sessions mean to the local people. Anne said: “Everyone is welcome, anyone looking to make friends in the area. That’s what this is about. It has had a big impact on people. Many now come to our craft group at our Grangetown church as well. They’ve recognised that The Salvation Army has something special. The atmosphere is wonderful.”

For members like Hilary Mitchell, the group has provided vital support during difficult times. Hilary said: “Anne has brought people in the community together. When I first started, I had a lot of problems, but Anne was on hand to listen to me. She is living up to her Christian values. We have all become good friends and the group has gone from strength to strength under her guidance.”

Giving Back

The talented crafters are also using their skills to help others by knitting hats for premature babies at a local hospital. They are currently busy making hundreds of poppies for the Royal British Legion before Remembrance Day on November 11, 2026. The group is even working with The Royal Marines Charity to create blankets for veterans and retired seafarers.

Personal Stories

Jeanette Mackey joined the sessions after she retired and says the group has given her a fresh sense of purpose. Jeanette said: “After I retired, I needed purpose to go out. This group has boosted my moods for the better. I am a much happier person since coming to the groups run by Anne.”
