A former Solihull pub has been acquired by an Islamic organisation, according to online reports. Deen Central at the Hub announced it has purchased the Flying Elephant, along with associated land and buildings, located opposite their current base on Hermitage Road.
New Facility for Community Betterment
The group stated that the new facility would support the ongoing betterment of the community through the establishment of a commercial waqf—an Islamic charitable endowment—to generate funds and expand their Masjid. The Hub currently hosts five daily prayers, Jum'a prayers, Tarawih and Eid Salah, as well as various events throughout the year.
Aims and Activities
According to their website, the Hub aims to focus on the needs of the diverse Muslim community while ensuring facilities are open to all. They seek to meet local community needs by promoting health, education, and social support. The organisation also strives to provide Muslims and non-Muslims with opportunities to learn about Islam through dialogue, discussion, and social interaction, contributing to the social, cultural, and spiritual enhancement of the whole community.
The Hub actively promotes tolerance and understanding, maintaining excellent interfaith relations with regular meetings involving representatives from major faiths. The Solihull Muslimah Network (SOMNET), a volunteer-led ladies' community group, is also based at the Hub.
History of the Flying Elephant
The Flying Elephant opened in February 2020, replacing the Red House pub. It served traditional Indian food with a Kenyan influence, but inspectors found dangerous cooking equipment during an immigration raid. Noise complaints were raised by residents who reported shouts and screams continuing until 3am. The pub closed last August and has remained empty since.
The Hub has been contacted for additional comment but has not yet responded.
