Erewash’s deputy mayor, Councillor Linda Burns, officially opened a new £160,000 jungle-themed adventure zone at Wash Meadows, known locally as 'Johnny’s' park, providing an inclusive and accessible play area for local children. The playground, located next to the Tesco superstore on Rutland Street, features slides, climbing challenges, interactive elements, and a refurbished basketball court, replacing a tired old playground.
Community Choice and Funding
The jungle theme was selected by local residents through a vote, and funding was secured from the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Erewash Borough Council invested £160,000 in the project. Pupils from Chaucer Junior School attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Councillor and MP Statements
Councillor Burns said: “The park was used by my children when I first moved to Ilkeston - and they are now in their late 40s. It is fantastic that we have now been able to replace the old playground with a stunning design chosen by local people.” Councillor Josy Hare, lead member for health and wellbeing, added: “This is just the latest terrific upgrade to where children can have fun in the borough. The council is planning yet more thanks to its new Erewash Investment Fund - which is £6.5m that is being ploughed into boosting the borough in all kinds of ways.” Erewash MP Adam Thompson commented: “This kind of investment is what it’s all about - no more shattered tarmac and decades-old play equipment - a fun, friendly place for children to play and which local families can enjoy together.”
Positive Community Response
Local families have embraced the new facilities. One resident said: “They love it. It’s lovely to see it being used like it is.” Another added: “It’s really good.” Online feedback has described the area as 'brilliant' and 'lovely'. A mother of two said: “My five and two-year-olds love it!”
Scout Donation
At the opening, Bertie, a member of the second Ilkeston Scouts, received a £100 Ikea voucher from playground equipment contractor HAGS. Scout leader Andrew Girvan said: “We will be using it to buy pots, pans and other camping equipment.” HAGS also donated similar sums to the fourth Ilkeston Scouts, Erewash’s Arena food bank, and the local arm of the P3 housing charity.
