Merry Hill shopping centre is working with local organisations to support those affected by the wildfires that swept through Stourbridge on Thursday, August 13. The blaze, one of the worst to hit the West Midlands, destroyed 19 properties and scorched more than 500 acres.
Centre's Response to the Wildfire
A spokesman for Merry Hill said: "All of us at Merry Hill are extending our thoughts to everyone affected by the wildfires in Stourbridge. We are incredibly grateful for the tireless efforts of the West Midlands Fire Service crew in tackling the fire, and all our Emergency Services for keeping people safe."
The spokesman added: "We are also thankful for everyone within the wider community that has come together to support one another during this challenging time. We are currently coordinating with local organisations where we as a centre can best support those affected, both immediately and in the long-term."
Community Suggestions and Actions
People have suggested ways the centre can help, such as becoming a donation station and using empty shops to store items. Others are encouraging restaurants to offer free food and drink to those affected.
Merry Hill already has a donation point for its charity partner Black Country Food Bank at its customer services desk.
Ongoing Support and Safety Warnings
West Midlands Fire Service has started its process to support residents in getting back to their homes where possible. Meanwhile, people are being warned not to ignite fires in 'tinderbox' Britain.
For the latest guidance, the centre refers residents to West Midlands Fire Service and Dudley Borough Council.
