A new charity has been established in the Midlands to support the Chinese community and promote Chinese culture. The Midlands Chinese Community and Culture Association (MCCCA) officially launched on 1st March 2023, aiming to provide a range of services including cultural events, language classes, and welfare support for the growing Chinese population in the region.
Charity Aims to Preserve Culture and Provide Support
The charity's founder, Dr. Li Wei, stated that the organisation will focus on preserving Chinese heritage while helping community members integrate into British society. "We want to create a bridge between the Chinese community and the wider Midlands population," Dr. Li said. The charity plans to organise festivals, workshops, and social gatherings to foster understanding and cooperation.
Services and Activities Planned
MCCCA will offer Mandarin and Cantonese language classes, traditional Chinese medicine workshops, and legal advice sessions. It also intends to establish a community centre in Birmingham to serve as a hub for activities. According to the charity, there are over 50,000 Chinese residents in the Midlands, many of whom face challenges accessing culturally appropriate services.
Funding and Support
The charity has received initial funding from the National Lottery Community Fund and local donations. It is also seeking volunteers and partnerships with local businesses. Dr. Li emphasised that the charity is non-political and open to all, regardless of background. "Our doors are open to anyone interested in Chinese culture," she added.
Impact on the Community
Local community leaders have welcomed the initiative. Councillor John Smith of Birmingham City Council said, "This charity fills a gap in support for the Chinese community. It will help reduce isolation and promote diversity." The charity plans to hold its first major event, a Chinese New Year celebration, in January 2024.
