Rossendale Ramblers Cover 31 Miles Across Four Diverse Walks

Over the past week, the Rossendale Ramblers have collectively walked 31 miles across four separate walks, with weather conditions as diverse as the routes themselves. A total of 70 participants joined in, enjoying everything from sunny spells to heavy rain.

Wednesday Walk: Bolton-by-Bowland

On Wednesday, 18 ramblers set off on an 11-mile walk from the picturesque village of Bolton-by-Bowland. The group enjoyed pleasant rural views for most of the route, but an hour before the finish, heavy rain descended, dampening the final stretch.

Friday Walk: Bury to Rawtenstall

Friday saw eight ramblers undertake a 10-mile linear walk from Bury to Rawtenstall. The route proved interesting, passing through Pigs Lea Brow, 'the Plunge' at Edenfield, and Brow Edge Quarry. Unfortunately, the weather was less forgiving, with the group facing challenging conditions throughout.

Saturday Pub Walk: Kirklees Valley

Saturday featured one of the group's popular two-hour pub walks, starting from Bury. The route primarily followed the Kirklees Valley Local Nature Reserve, offering a mix of natural beauty and industrial heritage. All 15 walkers enjoyed mostly sunny weather, followed by optional refreshments and lunch.

Sunday Walk: Marl Pits to Bonfire Hill

Sunday brought glorious sunshine for a six-mile walk from Marl Pits, ascending to Bonfire Hill and returning via Waingate Village. The turnout was 29 participants, including 17 members of the Friends of Bocholt, who were raising sponsorship for an exchange trip to Bocholt, Germany, in July. It was a delight to meet the six youngsters preparing for the trip. The walk leader noted the impressive age range, from eight to 86 years old.

Upcoming Walks

On Sunday, April 26, a six-mile walk from Higham Village will explore the 'hidden valley' near Sabden before crossing the moor to Churn Clough Reservoir. Then, on Wednesday, April 29, a 10-mile walk from Rylstone will take in the charming villages of Cracoe, Linton, and Hetton, offering glorious views on a decent day.

All walks are free, but after three walks, participants are asked to join The Ramblers at a cost of only £3.75 per month.
