Volunteer Drivers Urgently Needed for North Broxtowe Transport Scheme
Volunteer Drivers Needed for North Broxtowe Transport

The Eastwood Volunteer Bureau and Foodbank is urgently appealing for additional volunteer drivers to help expand its vital transport service across North Broxtowe. If you have spare time and enjoy driving, the Bureau is keen to hear from you.

Why Volunteer Drivers Are Needed

Additional volunteer drivers are urgently needed to support local elderly and vulnerable people who struggle to access public transport. The scheme helps residents attend hospital and GP appointments, visit friends, go to work, or simply get out for shopping and social activities.

Colin's Story

Colin, a volunteer driver since 2022, says the role has been one of the most rewarding experiences of his life. After retiring in 2018, he wanted to give back to the community and began volunteering once Covid restrictions eased.

“Volunteering with the Transport Scheme is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done,” he said. “I love helping people, whether it’s taking someone shopping, to an appointment or to see friends. The conversations along the way are fascinating, and I feel privileged people share their stories with me.”

What Drivers Can Expect

Drivers are unpaid but receive mileage expenses at 45p per mile, helping cover running costs without additional expense. A transport coordinator arranges all journeys and there is no expectation to work evenings or weekends. Volunteers can choose how much time they give, whether that’s a few hours a month or several days a week.

Impact on the Community

The service plays a crucial role in helping people maintain independence. Recent journeys have included trips to medical appointments, local community centres, shops and social venues across the area.

Transport coordinator Melanie said: “Not everyone has family or friends who can help with transport, and many can’t afford taxis. This service can make a real difference, helping people stay independent and connected rather than becoming isolated.”

How to Get Involved

To become a volunteer driver, you need some spare time, access to your own car, a good driving record, and a caring, patient attitude. A DBS check is required, with costs covered by the Bureau.
