A 19-year-old man was arrested and an axe was recovered after police spotted suspicious behaviour near a gym in West Bromwich. The incident occurred on Saturday evening, June 6, as part of a targeted operation to tackle serious youth violence and knife crime.
Arrest and Recovery
Officers from the West Midlands Police Project Guardian team, both in uniform and plain clothes, were patrolling hotspot areas when they noticed the teenager acting suspiciously near West Bromwich Ringway at around 5:15 pm. They detained him and a subsequent search of the area led to the discovery of an axe.
The 19-year-old was arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon. He has since been questioned and released on police bail while investigations continue.
Project Guardian Patrols
A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "We've arrested a man and recovered an axe after officers spotted suspicious behaviour near to a gym in West Bromwich. Officers in uniform and plain clothes were on a Project Guardian patrol, which target hotspot areas for serious youth violence and knife crime, at around 5.15pm on Saturday. Their attention was drawn by a man acting suspiciously near West Bromwich Ringway and he was detained. A search of the area resulted in the recovery of an axe."
The spokesperson added: "All over the West Midlands our Project Guardian teams work with Neighbourhood teams to act on intelligence and information received from the public and carry out targeted patrols and deployments."

The force is urging the public to report any suspicious activity by calling 101 or, in an emergency, dialling 999. Members of the community are encouraged to remain vigilant and assist in keeping the area safe.
