Birmingham Drink-Driver Escapes Jail After High-Speed A5 Tamworth Lorry Crash

Ethan Gayle, a 22-year-old from Birmingham, has avoided immediate imprisonment after being involved in a serious crash on the A5 in Tamworth while over the legal alcohol limit. The incident, which occurred on July 4 last year, saw Gayle undertake another vehicle at high speed before colliding with the back of a lorry, causing his Peugeot 208 to spin out of control on the dual carriageway.

Court Hearing Details

At Stafford Crown Court, it was revealed that Gayle had a blood alcohol reading of 97 milligrams per 100 millilitres, exceeding the legal limit. Additionally, police found cannabis in his possession during the investigation, which he admitted belonged to him. An eyewitness described the moments before the crash near Ventura Retail Park, noting that Gayle's car was 'juddering' due to the excessive speed.

Judge's Comments and Defence

Judge Mark Ainsworth condemned Gayle's actions as a 'highly dangerous manoeuvre' and a 'very bad example of dangerous driving'. He detailed how Gayle lost control, struck the lorry, and ended up facing the wrong way on the central reservation. In defence, it was argued that the incident was 'out of character' for Gayle, who was dealing with family circumstances at the time and had a clean driving record with no prior convictions.
