A brutal knifeman who stabbed, punched, and kicked a victim before calmly walking away empty-handed has been jailed for 17 years. Mohamed Mahamad, 37, from Browns Green, Handsworth, carried out the vicious attack in Gibson Road, Handsworth, in the early hours of July 26 last year. The victim, a man in his 20s, was left with life-threatening injuries after Mahamad attempted to steal his phone and bag.
Attack and Investigation
West Midlands Police reported that Mahamad stabbed, punched, and kicked the man during the failed robbery. After the attack, the 27-year-old calmly walked away without taking anything, leaving the victim seriously injured in the street. The victim was rushed to hospital with injuries initially considered life-threatening. The Major Crime Unit (MCU) launched an immediate investigation, speaking to witnesses and reviewing CCTV footage. Detectives identified Mahamad as a suspect and arrested him less than 24 hours after the attack.
Court Proceedings
Mahamad was charged with attempted murder, attempted robbery, and possession of a knife. In January, he was found guilty of wounding, attempted robbery, and possession of a bladed article. On Monday, June 8, he was sentenced to a total of 17 years in prison. Detective Sergeant Jeanette Roberts from MCU said: "Throughout the investigation, our thoughts have remained with the man who was hurt – as he continues to recover from his very serious injuries. There is no doubt that due to the callous and sustained attack at the hands of Mahamad, he could well have lost his life." She also commended those who intervened to stop the assault, noting that without their actions, the outcome could have been even worse.
The police team worked quickly to identify and bring Mahamad to justice. Det Sgt Roberts added: "We remain completely committed to reducing knife crime and bringing offenders like him to justice." The case highlights the ongoing efforts of West Midlands Police to tackle knife crime in the region.
