A man has been charged with assaulting an emergency worker following an incident on Soho Road in Birmingham. Josiah Johnson, aged 28, appeared before magistrates accused of multiple offences after a police officer was reportedly kicked in the face.
Details of the Charges
Johnson, a resident of Birmingham, faces charges of assault, assaulting an emergency worker, two counts of criminal damage, and one count of attempted criminal damage. The charges stem from an incident on Monday, May 25, when an officer was kicked in the face on Soho Road in Handsworth.
Police Statement
West Midlands Police confirmed that following the assault, two police cars and an ambulance were damaged. Additionally, another officer was assaulted in the custody block. A force spokesperson stated: "We are aware of video footage circulating, which we are reviewing as part of our investigation."
Court Appearance and Bail Conditions
Johnson is scheduled to appear at Birmingham Magistrates' Court next month for his first hearing. As part of his bail conditions, he is prohibited from being on Soho Road "for any reason," police said.
Community and Police Response
Chief Inspector Neata Simpson condemned the attack, saying: "We never tolerate any form of assault against our officers. Officers are highly trained in detaining people safely and must have clear grounds to do so. Any form of assault against them is unacceptable."
She also expressed gratitude to the local community on Soho Road, particularly to a member of the public who intervened to help. Patrols in the area have been increased recently, with Operation Fearless expanding to Soho Road to enhance safety.
