Birmingham Man Critically Injured in Handsworth Attack, Relative Found After Police Appeal
A 60-year-old Birmingham man is fighting for his life in hospital after a serious assault at a property in Handsworth. Mark Patrick Regan was attacked on Friday, April 17, at a residence on Tew Park Road, sustaining critical injuries that required immediate hospitalisation.
Police Launch Urgent Appeal for Relatives
West Midlands Police responded to the incident alongside paramedics and launched a public appeal over the weekend to locate family members of Mr Regan. The force confirmed that a relative has since come forward following this appeal, expressing gratitude to the community for their assistance in sharing the information.
Charges Laid and Court Appearance Scheduled
In connection with the assault, Paul Holloway, aged 38 and of Tew Park Road in Handsworth, has been charged with wounding with intent. He was remanded in custody and is set to appear before Birmingham Magistrates' Court today, April 20. Police have stated they are treating the attack as an isolated incident, though investigations are ongoing.
Ongoing Investigation and Community Response
A spokesperson for West Midlands Police provided an update, saying, "We'd like to thank everyone who shared our earlier appeal to find relatives of a man who was seriously assaulted at a property in Handsworth. The man, 60, was left critically injured after being assaulted at a property on Tew Park Road on Friday. He remains in hospital in a critical condition."
The spokesperson added, "A man, 38, has been charged with wounding with intent, and remanded in custody to appear before Birmingham magistrates. We are treating the attack as an isolated incident. Despite carrying out a number of enquiries, we had been unable to find any relatives. But thanks to our earlier appeal, a relative has now come forward. Thank you to everyone who shared our earlier update."
Mr Regan continues to receive medical care, with his condition described as critical. The police emphasise that this appears to be an isolated event, and no further threats to the public are indicated at this time.
