Birmingham PC's Dramatic Tackle on Motorbike Thieves Caught on CCTV
Birmingham PC Tackles Motorbike Thieves in City Centre

In a dramatic display of swift police action, a Birmingham officer was captured on CCTV racing through the bustling city centre before launching himself at a suspected motorbike thief. The high-adrenaline incident unfolded near New Street Station, showcasing the real-time coordination between officers and surveillance operators.

Real-Time Pursuit and Arrest

PC Keelan Walsh was directed by a vigilant CCTV operator as two men, arriving on a stolen motorbike bearing an L plate, targeted a second machine in Navigation Street adjacent to Grand Central. The footage released by West Midlands Police reveals the precise moment PC Walsh jumped onto a masked individual seated on one of the bikes. Despite the suspect dismounting and fleeing, the officer's quick reflexes led to the apprehension of his suspected accomplice.

Coordinated Police Response

With assistance from PC Jess Roughley, the arrest was executed around 7 pm, following the CCTV operator's tracking of a suspicious motorbike ridden in the city centre approximately a minute earlier. The vehicle, lacking registration plates and featuring an L plate at the front, carried two individuals with their faces concealed, heightening suspicions.

As one suspect attempted to mount the second bike, PC Walsh pounced on the rider of the first motorbike. He then seized the second man, issuing a firm warning: "get on the ground, I’ll Taser you." After throwing him to the floor, PC Walsh alerted colleagues, stating, "One male detained and one running back towards The Ramp." He proceeded to arrest the individual on suspicion of motor vehicle theft, administering the standard caution while breathlessly applying handcuffs.

Ongoing Investigation

An 18-year-old remains in custody, facing allegations of vehicle theft offences and assault with intent to resist arrest. However, the second suspect managed to escape, prompting police to appeal to the public for assistance in identification. Chief Insp Vicki Stott of Birmingham Police commended the officers, highlighting "first-rate work" and effective communication that led to the recovery of one stolen bike and prevention of another theft.

Public Appeal for Information

West Midlands Police have urged anyone recognising the fugitive to come forward, quoting reference 20/130026/26 when contacting 101. The stolen motorbike involved had been taken earlier in the day within Birmingham, underscoring the persistent issue of vehicle crime in urban areas. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by law enforcement in combating such offences and the critical role of public vigilance in supporting police efforts.
