A teenager from Birmingham who stabbed a 17-year-old boy in Kingstanding has avoided jail after claiming he acted in self-defence. Hayden Pipe, now 20, from Preston Road, Hockley, was handed a two-year community order at Birmingham Crown Court on Tuesday, April 28. He pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding and possession of a bladed article in public.

The Incident

The attack occurred on August 10, 2024, when Pipe and his mother encountered a group including the victim at Banners Walk in Kingstanding. A verbal exchange escalated, leading Pipe to produce a knife and slash the teenager. The victim suffered serious injuries and spent nearly two weeks in hospital.

Aftermath and Court Proceedings

Pipe returned home and hid the knife behind bathroom panelling but immediately told police its location when arrested. His defence lawyer admitted he had a 'playground mentality' and issues with immaturity. Recorder Fisher told Pipe: 'Were it not for the curfew and your personal mitigation you would be straight down the stairs.' She noted his circumstances were 'unique and peculiar.'

Pipe must complete 40 days of rehabilitation activity, 80 hours of unpaid work, and pay £600 compensation to his victim. The sentence reflects the court's consideration of his guilty plea and personal circumstances, despite the severity of the offence.
