Blue Badge Holders Warned Over Hidden Parking Rules at Supermarkets and Hospitals

Millions of drivers across the country are at risk of breaking a hidden car park rule at locations such as supermarkets and hospitals, according to a mobility expert. Daniel Swain, a secondhand mobility scooter specialist from Seacroft Mobility, has issued a crucial warning to Blue Badge holders about potential rule violations that could lead to significant penalties.

Common Misconceptions About Blue Badge Parking

Motorists often assume that a Blue Badge entitles them to free parking everywhere, but this is not always the case. Daniel Swain emphasised that while a Blue Badge typically offers free parking, this can vary by location, with some private sites still charging fees for people with disabilities.

Daniel Swain stated: "Don't assume free parking. A Blue Badge doesn't always guarantee free parking in a private car park, like at a supermarket or hospital. You must always read the signs there, as you might still have to pay or register your vehicle."

The Risks of Ignoring Parking Regulations

Daniel Swain highlighted that this is a widespread issue, with many people mistakenly believing their Blue Badge is a licence to park anywhere for free. He explained that different councils and even individual car parks have their own specific rules and regulations.

"A simple mistake could cost you hundreds in fines or, in the worst cases, result in your badge being taken away," Swain warned, underscoring the serious consequences of non-compliance.

Official Guidance on Blue Badge Usage

According to GOV.UK guidelines: "You may park for free. Unless signs say otherwise, you may park without time limit. You must display the Blue Badge (and the blue parking clock if the bay is time-limited). Always try to use these bays instead of parking on yellow lines. There are a number of restrictions and local parking schemes which you need to be aware of."

Understanding the Blue Badge Scheme

A Blue Badge is a permit designed to assist people with disabilities or specific health conditions by allowing them to park in designated accessible spaces or areas where parking is typically restricted. The scheme aims to help individuals with mobility difficulties, including those with physical disabilities, severe health conditions, or sensory impairments, access services and perform daily activities more conveniently.

Blue Badge holders can generally park in spaces closer to building entrances, facilitating easier access to shops, medical facilities, and other essential services. However, this privilege comes with responsibilities to adhere to local parking regulations.
