A violent assault on Birmingham's famous Broad Street has left a young man requiring major surgery, as police continue to appeal for witnesses following the arrest and subsequent bail of a suspect.
Details of the Night Out Assault
The incident occurred on Saturday, December 13, at approximately 11pm. The victim, a 28-year-old mechanic, was on a night out with friends. He was crossing the road from the Walkabout bar towards Popworld on the city's renowned 'golden mile' when the attack took place.
The assault was severe, leaving the man with significant facial injuries. He was rushed to New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton that same night. His injuries necessitated an operation, which he underwent on the following Monday. He was discharged from hospital the day after his surgery.
Police Investigation and Suspect Bailed
In the days following the incident, West Midlands Police issued a public appeal for information, including a photo. This led to the arrest of a 27-year-old man in connection with the assault.
However, in an update on Tuesday, January 13, the force confirmed the suspect has been bailed with conditions while enquiries continue. The crime reference number for the case is 20/474937/25.
Ongoing Appeal for Witnesses
Detectives are urging anyone with information who has not yet come forward to make contact. They are particularly keen to speak to anyone who was on Broad Street that night and may have seen the altercation.
West Midlands Police stated: "Anyone with information that could help our investigation should contact us on 101 or via Live Chat on our website."
The case highlights ongoing concerns about safety in Birmingham's nightlife district. Authorities are determined to piece together the full circumstances of the attack that left a young man with life-altering injuries.
