Serial Burglar Ends Up in Hospital After Terrifying Newcastle Home Invasion

A serial offender who broke into a family home in Newcastle's West End found himself requiring hospital treatment after a confrontation with the resident husband, with his injuries clearly visible in subsequent police photographs.

The Terrifying Nighttime Ordeal

The incident occurred on December 12 last year at a ground-floor flat on Dilston Road. The victims were asleep when David Shackleton, 39, entered their home. The woman was sleeping in a bedroom with her six-year-old son, while her husband was in the living room with their other two children.

Prosecutor Jennifer Coxon told Newcastle Crown Court that the woman "woke to find the defendant stood in front of her holding a saw, which was taken from their kitchen cupboard." The terrified woman screamed and ran into the living room, with Shackleton following her while demanding money and waving the saw.

Confrontation and Escape

The husband then struck Shackleton, leading to a physical altercation. During the fight, Shackleton sustained significant facial injuries before fleeing the scene. To make his escape, he stole a bicycle belonging to the family.

Police were contacted and discovered the burglary victim with blood on his hands. Shackleton was subsequently arrested on Elswick Road and taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries before being detained.

Criminal History and Sentencing

Shackleton, of Yewvale Road, Fenham, Newcastle, has an extensive criminal record with 74 previous convictions, including seven previous burglaries. He pleaded guilty to burglary and theft charges.

Recorder Felicity Davies sentenced him to three years imprisonment, stating: "It seems you came off worst but you got away. Children were disturbed during the offence and you stood over a sleeping woman with a child with a saw in her bedroom."

Defense and Rehabilitation Efforts

Defense solicitor Jamie Adams stated that Shackleton is attempting to address his addiction problems and "better himself for the future" while expressing eagerness to turn his life around. Adams added: "He realises the harm he has been doing to all of his victims, in particularly the victims of the crime he committed that night."

The case highlights the traumatic impact of home invasions on families and the unexpected consequences that can occur when residents confront intruders in their own homes.
