A man armed with a crowbar attacked five people at a Merseyside hospital after being refused an appointment, leading to a swift police response and multiple arrests.
Violent Outburst Follows Appointment Denial
The incident unfolded at Newton Community Hospital in Newton-le-Willows on Tuesday, 30 November. According to Merseyside Police, a man in his 20s attended the site requesting an appointment. When his request was denied, he became "increasingly agitated".
The situation escalated rapidly. The man is alleged to have first damaged a counter on the premises before producing a weapon, believed to be a crowbar, and assaulting several people within the hospital.
Five Injured in Hospital Assault
The attack resulted in five people sustaining injuries. Paramedics treated the victims at the hospital for wounds that are not believed to be life-threatening.
Officers were called to reports of a man behaving aggressively and were on the scene immediately. The suspect was swiftly located and arrested by responding police.
Police Investigation and Appeal
The detained man, who police say is originally from Afghanistan, remains in custody. He was arrested on suspicion of:
- Five counts of Section 18 assault
- Affray
- Criminal damage
A police scene remained in place following the incident, and the public were initially advised to avoid the area. Video footage from the scene showed a man being escorted by four officers into a waiting police van.
St Helens Neighbourhood Superintendent Sarah Rotherham issued a statement appealing for information. "I would like to take this opportunity for anyone who witnessed this incident at the hospital to contact us," she said.
