West Midlands Police have seized a firearm, ammunition, and suspected drugs from a converted 'bed bus' that was allegedly being used for prostitution in a residential area of Wolverhampton. The vehicle, which had been adapted to accommodate multiple sleepers, had become a significant source of anti-social behaviour in the Bushbury neighbourhood.
Discovery of Illegal Items During Police Operation
Officers conducted an initial search of the bus on Friday, January 30, which led to the execution of a firearms warrant. Armed police units then carried out a thorough examination of the vehicle, uncovering a self-loading pistol and four shotgun cartridges hidden inside.
The seized pistol is believed to be a blank-firing weapon, but investigators noted that such devices can be converted into functional firearms. Even in their current state, these weapons are illegal to possess as they can be used to imitate viable firearms, posing serious risks to public safety.
Multiple Criminal Activities Uncovered
In addition to the firearm and ammunition, police discovered evidence of drug use and confirmed that the bus was being utilised for prostitution activities. The vehicle, which had been parked on Kipling Road in Wolverhampton, was found to be uninsured and had become what authorities described as a 'hub for crime and anti-social behaviour.'
A quantity of suspected class A drugs was also confiscated during the operation, further highlighting the multiple illegal activities centred around the converted bus.
Vehicle Removal and Ongoing Investigation
The bus has been removed from the location and seized by authorities for further forensic examination as investigations continue. Police are working to determine the full extent of criminal activity associated with the vehicle and identify all individuals involved.
Inspector Martin Danher commented on the operation, stating: "This was an involved piece of work from one of our dedicated neighbourhood officers and the local team with support from firearms officers. The bed bus has been misused and instead has been used as a hub for crime and ASB, a firearm and ammunition have also been taken off our streets."
Community Impact and Police Response
The presence of the 'bed bus' had created considerable concern among local residents in Bushbury, with reports indicating it had become a hotspot for disruptive behaviour. The police intervention represents a significant step in addressing community safety concerns in the area.
West Midlands Police have emphasised their commitment to tackling anti-social behaviour and removing dangerous weapons from circulation. The seizure of the firearm and ammunition represents a tangible success in their ongoing efforts to improve public safety across the region.
