Lozells and East Handsworth has been identified as Birmingham's most dangerous area, with over 2,300 violent crimes and sexual offences reported in the 12 months to April, according to the latest West Midlands Police figures.
Crime Hotspots in North Birmingham
The policing area, which covers parts of Handsworth and Lozells, recorded the highest number of serious offences in the city. Neighbouring Aston is not far behind, with a similar number of over 2,300 violent and sexual crimes during the same period.
These serious crimes include murders, stabbings, robberies, fights, domestic violence, and sexual attacks. The streets in these areas have been the scene of gang-related shootings and stabbings, often linked to turf wars.
Impact on Residents
Local residents and business owners have expressed fear over the ongoing violence. In November last year, 19-year-old Yassin Alama was stabbed to death with a zombie knife on Hutton Road, Handsworth, in what prosecutors described as an "ongoing postcode war." Oumar Traore, allegedly a member of the 'B20' gang, was charged with the murder.
The only other Birmingham area with over 2,000 serious offences was South Yardley, which recorded a similar high number of violent and sexual crimes.
Police Response
West Midlands Police continue to patrol these areas, with officers kept busy responding to incidents. The force categorises violent and sexual offences as the most serious crimes, requiring immediate attention.
