Man Jailed for Machete Threat and Rooftop Standoff in Birmingham
Joshua Brivett, a 24-year-old man, has been sentenced to two years and eight months in prison following a violent incident that involved threatening an asylum seeker with a machete and a prolonged rooftop standoff with police in Handsworth, Birmingham.
Details of the Incident
The events unfolded when Brivett, dressed in a dress and armed with a machete, forced his way into accommodation on London Road. He threatened an asylum seeker, stating he would cut off her head if she screamed, while making a slicing gesture across his neck with the weapon, as detailed by prosecutor Ilana Davis at Birmingham Crown Court.
Rooftop Rampage
After the initial threat, Brivett climbed onto rooftops, where he engaged in a three-hour standoff with emergency services. During this time, he hurled bricks, masonry, and even an industrial container of mayonnaise at police officers below. This aggressive behavior resulted in injuries: a police officer was struck on the ankle, and a paramedic with 24 years of service was hit on the back by debris.
Police Response and Detainment
Firearms officers were deployed to the scene as Brivett continued his rampage above the Saqib Kebab House, smashing windows and demanding hot food and cigarettes from negotiators. The standoff concluded at 6.45 pm when police used stun grenades to successfully detain him.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
During his sentencing hearing, Brivett was observed laughing while watching CCTV footage of himself pacing on the rooftop with a half-shaved head. Judge Richard Bond expressed little sympathy, noting that Brivett had caused chaos for approximately three hours. The court heard that Brivett was experiencing a mental breakdown at the time, worsened by heavy cannabis use. He has a history of 25 previous offences and pleaded guilty to charges including affray, possession of an offensive weapon, and two counts of assaulting emergency workers.
