Urgent Warning After Nine Brits Die in Open Water During Heatwave
Nine Die in Open Water During UK Heatwave, Urgent Warning Issued

The Royal Life Saving Society has issued an urgent plea for people to 'stop and think' before entering open water after nine British nationals, including a boy from Cheshire, died during the UK heatwave. The fatalities occurred following days of record-breaking temperatures, with officials urging families to exercise caution as the warm conditions persist.

Warm Weather Correlates with Increased Drownings

The society stated that 'warmer weather unfortunately correlates to an increase in accidental drownings' and warned that despite the hot air temperatures, 'water temperatures remain very cold'. Tuesday recorded the hottest temperatures ever measured in both England and Wales, with provisional figures showing 35.1C at Kew Gardens and 32.9C in Cardiff's Bute Park.

Fatalities Across the Country

Fatalities have been recorded in South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Cornwall, Hampshire, Warwickshire, Cheshire, Pembrokeshire, Lincolnshire, and Lancashire. Among the victims was Declan Sawyer, 15, who died at Swanholme Lakes, Lincoln, on Sunday. A 72-year-old woman also died after being pulled from the water at West Angle Bay beach in Pembrokeshire. A 13-year-old boy, understood to be Reco Puttock, died at Leadbeater Dam near Halifax, and the body of a teenage girl was recovered from Kingsbury Water Park in Warwickshire.

The body of a teenager was retrieved from Rother Valley Country Park in Rotherham early Tuesday. A search for a teenage boy who vanished at Hawley Lake on the Hampshire/Surrey border resulted in the discovery of a body. On Tuesday evening, Lancashire Police confirmed the body of a 12-year-old boy was pulled from the River Ribble after he got into difficulty while swimming with friends at Ribchester. On Wednesday, Cheshire Constabulary announced the body of a 17-year-old boy was recovered from Pickmere Lake in Marston, Northwich.

RNLI and Irish Authorities Also Report Deaths

The RNLI warned of the 'very real risk' of swimming in open water during the heatwave. In Ireland, Gardaí confirmed a teenage girl died in the sea at Burrow Beach near Howth on Sunday.

NHS Sees Surge in Heatstroke Advice Visits

Visits to NHS web pages soared during the heatwave. NHS England reported 20,092 visits to its heatstroke advice page on bank holiday Monday, up from 488 the previous Monday. Over the weekend, there were 36,724 hits. Sunburn guidance pages received 5,342 visits on Monday and 10,314 over the weekend. Baby first aid and sun safety guidance visits increased by nearly 3,500% on Monday, with 4,728 hits. Elderly people and babies are especially at risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and potentially fatal heatstroke.

Weather Forecast and Health Alerts

Temperatures are expected to drop slightly, but health officials have extended heat health alerts. The UK Health Security Agency said amber alerts for the South West, South East, London, East and West Midlands, and East of England will remain until 5pm on Thursday, with yellow alerts for the North West and North East. The Met Office issued a yellow thunderstorm warning for much of Wales, the South West of England, and parts of the Midlands from 3pm to 11.59pm on Wednesday, with potential torrential rain, lightning, hail, and strong winds.
