Pastor Faces Manslaughter Charge Following Baptism Drowning in Birmingham
A stark warning has been issued by authorities after a 48-year-old pastor was formally charged with gross negligence manslaughter in connection with the tragic drowning of a man during a baptism ceremony in Birmingham.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed in a statement released on Wednesday that the charge relates to the death of 61-year-old Robert Smith, who drowned at a property on Slade Road in the Erdington area on October 8, 2023. Mr. Smith was originally from Brixton in south London.
The CPS has urged the public and media to exercise extreme caution, emphasizing that no one should share or comment online about the case, as doing so could risk prejudicing the ongoing court proceedings.
Legal Proceedings and Public Interest
Cheryl Bartley, the pastor from Erdington who faces the single count of gross negligence manslaughter, is scheduled to appear before Birmingham Magistrates' Court on Thursday, May 14. The charge stems from her role during the baptism ceremony where the fatal incident occurred.
Malcolm McHaffie, Head of the CPS's Special Crime Division, stated, "Our prosecutors have worked diligently to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring this case to court and that it is in the public interest to pursue criminal proceedings." He further highlighted the close collaboration with West Midlands Police throughout the investigation.
Warning Against Prejudicing the Trial
In a firm reminder, McHaffie added, "We remind all concerned that criminal proceedings against this defendant are active and that she has the right to a fair trial. It is vital that there should be no reporting, commentary, or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings."
The case underscores the serious legal and community implications surrounding the incident, as authorities work to ensure justice is served while protecting the integrity of the judicial process.
