Police Chase Ending in Crash Outside Villa Park Referred to Watchdog
A dramatic police chase that concluded with a serious crash outside Aston Villa's Villa Park stadium in the early hours of Tuesday, February 24, has been officially referred to the police watchdog for investigation.
Three Arrested After Collision with Lorry
The incident occurred just before 1:55 AM at the junction of Trinity Road and Witton Lane in Aston. According to West Midlands Police, a Volkswagen Passat, which was fleeing officers, collided with a heavy goods vehicle (HGV). Three individuals were subsequently arrested at the scene.
One man, believed to be in his 20s, sustained injuries that required hospital treatment. Authorities have confirmed that his condition is not considered life-threatening, though he remains under medical care. Two other suspects, aged 17 and 22, were also taken to hospital but have since been discharged.
Serious Allegations and Ongoing Investigation
The two discharged individuals are currently in police custody, facing serious allegations including possession of a firearm, dangerous driving, and failing to stop for police. The lorry driver involved in the collision was fortunately unharmed.
In a statement, West Midlands Police detailed the sequence of events, noting that initial reports of a group of men with a suspected firearm on Trinity Road were received shortly after 1:20 AM. Officers sighted the vehicle approximately half an hour later, at which point it failed to stop, leading to the collision moments after.
Emergency Response and Referral to IOPC
West Midlands Ambulance Service deployed a significant response team to the scene, including three ambulances, a paramedic officer, and a trauma doctor accompanied by a critical care paramedic. All three patients were treated for potentially serious injuries and transported to hospitals for further care.
The police force has confirmed that the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) has been notified of the incident, which is standard procedure following such events involving police pursuits and collisions. The road was temporarily closed to facilitate a thorough investigation, with officers collecting CCTV footage and conducting door-to-door enquiries.
