Dramatic body-camera footage has revealed the moment a police dog successfully located a suspect who attempted to evade capture by hiding inside a wheelie bin following a high-speed car chase.
The Chase Begins
Nottinghamshire Police deployed a specialist dog unit after two individuals fled from a vehicle that had failed to stop for officers in the early hours of November 12. The incident began when police observed suspicious behaviour from the driver at a petrol station in Wollaton, Nottingham.
As officers approached, the vehicle suddenly sped away from the forecourt, initiating a pursuit through residential areas. The driver led traffic police on a dangerous high-speed chase before eventually losing control and crashing into the driveway of a property on Central Avenue.
The Search Intensifies
While one suspect was apprehended immediately near the crash site, the second managed to escape police custody after being pursued by PD Seth, a four-year-old Belgian Malinois. The fleeing suspect broke free from officers, scaled several garden fences, and disappeared into the darkness.
Undeterred by the setback, PD Seth demonstrated remarkable determination by continuing to track the suspect's scent. The skilled police dog eventually led his handler to the front garden of a house on nearby Boundary Road, where his behaviour indicated something unusual.
The Unusual Discovery
The handler noticed Seth paying particular attention to a row of wheelie bins. Upon lifting one of the lids, the officer discovered the missing suspect standing inside the container. Body-cam footage captures the officer shouting: "Police with a dog, come out now, last warning, step out now."
The officer can then be heard radioing colleagues to confirm: "I've got him, he's in a bin." The 33-year-old suspect was subsequently arrested on suspicion of multiple offences including dangerous driving, drug driving, failing to stop, possessing an offensive weapon, and common assault.
A second man, aged 30, was apprehended on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon, having a Class A drug, and committing a public order offence. Police searches of the vehicle revealed a knuckle duster and a small quantity of suspected Class A drugs. Both men have since been released on bail pending further investigation.
Police Praise Canine Hero
PC James Boden from Nottinghamshire Police commented: "We were waiting in a petrol station forecourt when the subject vehicle pulled in and out again without stopping. Our suspicions were confirmed a short time later by the driver of this car, who tried to outrun us."
He added: "Thanks to a full team effort, we were soon able to bring two suspects into custody."
Sergeant Nicholas Dachtler from Nottinghamshire Police's dog section praised PD Seth's exceptional performance: "A little over 24 hours after detaining his last criminal suspect, Seth once again reminded us of his exceptional tracking abilities. After initially losing out and being left only with a jacket for his troubles, Seth showed admirable determination to continue the search and soon led his handler to a suspect hiding in an unusual location."
The force revealed that PD Seth has been enjoying a successful career after being donated by a member of the public from the West Midlands. Following rescue by a local charity, he underwent intensive training with expert dog handlers at Nottinghamshire Police before receiving his operational licence in December 2023.
