Police Object to West Bromwich Pub Reopening After Violent Baton Attack
West Midlands Police have lodged a formal objection to plans for the Prince of Wales pub on West Bromwich High Street to reopen, following the revocation of its licence after a violent baton attack last year. The pub was shut down by Sandwell Council in December after owner Rajinder Singh, 69, lost his licence due to the incident involving unlicensed door staff.
Concerns Over Quick Turnaround and Safety
Police have expressed significant concerns about the "quick turnaround" in the new licence application submitted by Balbinder Singh, fearing the venue might operate in a similar manner as before. Officers noted that during the original incident, "customers carry on as normal and are clearly unfazed that a weapon has been used on customers both inside and outside of the premises."
The attack in November involved door staff using "excessive force" with a police-style baton, resulting in three people bleeding from the head. CCTV footage from the event was described as "horrific" during licensing hearings, with police labeling it a "preventable situation."
Fire Service Also Raises Objections
In addition to police objections, West Midlands Fire Service has also opposed the reopening, citing defective emergency lighting and the absence of a fire risk assessment at the premises. The new application seeks permission to operate from 9am to 3am daily, with alcohol sales permitted until 2.30am.
Defense and Community Support
Representatives for Mr. Singh acknowledged that the CCTV footage made for "unpleasant viewing" but argued that the pub owner had been "misled" by staff regarding the incident. Despite the objections, West Bromwich BID has supported the application, describing the venue as a "big part of the West Bromwich community."
The case highlights ongoing tensions between business interests and public safety in the area, with authorities emphasizing the need for stringent measures to prevent future violence.
