Predator Jailed for Raping Sleeping Teenagers in Flintshire Home Invasion

A sexual predator who raped two sleeping teenage girls, breaking into one of their homes in the middle of the night, has been jailed after a judge described his attacks as "totally depraved". Twenty-year-old Stefan Dobandi, with no fixed address, admitted to raping one of his victims twice and making indecent images of her during the assaults, which took place in May last year. He also pleaded guilty to raping a second teenage girl the following month.

Sentencing and Court Details

Dobandi was sentenced to 10 years in custody at Mold Crown Court, with a further two years on licence. Prosecuting, Karl Scholz explained to the court how both of his victims, who cannot be named, were asleep during the attacks. The crimes occurred in the Flintshire area, in north-east Wales, with Dobandi entering his victim's home at night while she slept before raping her in June, last year. She woke to find herself partly undressed and Dobandi next to her in bed before the police were called. Further attacks carried out in May were uncovered after officers examined Dobandi's phone.

Impact on Victims

The first victim bravely submitted a personal statement to be read in court, describing how the offences had made her feel "anxious and shocked" as well as making it difficult for her to trust people. She also struggled with sleeping and being in the house on her own. Another statement, made by the second victim, said she "slept and cried" when the investigation started, wanting "to be left alone". She added that she "couldn't keep her mind straight and was trying to work out what had happened". She also struggled to eat.

Legal Proceedings and Risk Assessment

Dobandi was 19 at the time of the crimes, and entered an early guilty plea, according to Gareth Bellis, defending, who used this information to ask for a sentence as short as possible. Judge Rhys Rowlands branded the crimes as being "totally depraved behaviour". The judge assessed the defendant as a "high risk" of reoffending, displaying "arrogance", with little "understanding or remorse" for what he had done to the two vulnerable young women. "They were either comatose or asleep," he added. Dobandi was a "dangerous offender", according to Judge Rowlands, as he gave him an extended sentence of 10 years in custody, with an extra two years on licence. Dobandi must serve two-thirds of this before he can be considered for release.

Additional Orders and Police Response

He must also register as a sex offender and was made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order, both indefinitely. Dobandi was also given a 10-year restraining order preventing him from contacting the two victims for 10 years. He must also pay a statutory surcharge. "Dobandi has proved himself to be a predator who is a danger to women," said investigating officer, Detective Constable Guto Hughes, after the hearing. "There is no doubt these horrific offences will likely impact his victims forever. I commend their courage for speaking out and reporting his crimes, which has led to his conviction today, and prevented him from committing further sexual offences." Tackling violence against women and girls remains a foremost priority for North Wales Police. "We are committed to identifying perpetrators, pursuing justice, and ensuring that victims receive the protection and support they need. We will continue to work tirelessly to hold offenders to account and to keep our communities safe."
