Tributes have been paid to a Midland pub boss who died in a Bank Holiday tragedy that sparked a murder investigation.
Victim identified in court
Matt O'Gara was named in court today, Wednesday, May 27, as the victim of an attack in Lichfield on Sunday, May 24. He died later in hospital.
Mr O'Gara was a director of The Plough pub in the village of Huddlesford, near the city. The pub remained closed today in response to what it called "very sad news involving one of our business partners".
Suspect charged
Billy Allison, 36, from Solihull, appeared at North Staffordshire Justice Centre today accused of murder and Section 18 grievous bodily harm with intent. He was remanded in custody.
Pub statement and community reaction
The Plough posted yesterday, Tuesday, May 26: "Due to some very sad news involving one of our business partners, we will be closed today and tomorrow. At this difficult time, we would like to give our staff and the family involved the time, privacy, and respect they need."
On the pub's Facebook page, Chris Williams said: "I’ve been mates with Matt for nearly 30 years, and only saw him a few weeks ago, truly devastated that he’s gone."
Alexandra Glew commented: "He was just the nicest guy, totally unbelievable and so tragic. Thoughts are with all his family and also the staff. He will be so missed."
Tracey Mills added: "Sincere condolences to all of his family friends and colleagues at this very difficult time."
The Red Lion Hopwas said: "Matt was clearly loved by so many and his loss will be felt throughout the whole community. Sending all our love and strength to everyone affected."
