The family of a father-of-two shot dead by police on Christmas Eve last year are staging a public protest today, Monday 22 December, as they mark the first anniversary of his death.
A Tragic Standoff in Redditch
Marcus Meade, aged 39, was fatally shot by officers from West Mercia Police during a five-hour standoff at his flat on Fownhope Close in Redditch. The incident occurred on Christmas Eve 2024. Mr Meade, who was originally from the Ladywood area of Birmingham, leaves behind two children.
His parents, Anthony Meade and Deborah Clarke, have consistently called for those responsible to be held accountable for their son's death. They state they have received "no satisfactory answers" regarding the circumstances that led to the shooting.
Demanding Justice and Accountability
The family and supporters from the 'Justice 4 Marcus Meade' campaign group were due to rally outside West Mercia Police's headquarters at Hindlip Hall in Worcester. The demonstration is scheduled to run from noon until 1.30pm.
During the protest, the family plans to present a petition calling for the suspension of the police officer involved in the fatal incident. Their primary demand is for transparency and justice, feeling that the past year has been marked by a lack of clear information.
Ongoing Investigation and Police Response
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which is conducting the probe into the shooting, has described it as "a tragic death" and confirmed its investigation is at an advanced stage.
West Mercia Police confirmed it is aware of the planned protest. A force spokesperson said: "We are working with the event organisers to ensure a safe gathering." The statement added, "We continue to express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Marcus Meade as we approach the first anniversary of his death. Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by this tragic incident."
