An 85-year-old retired policeman died after his trousers caught fire while he was gardening at his home in Telford, an inquest has heard.
Details of the incident
John William Smith, a former West Midlands Police officer, suffered fatal burns at his property in the Stirchley area of Telford on June 15, 2023. The inquest at Shropshire Coroner's Court heard that Mr Smith had been using a garden incinerator when his clothing ignited.
According to the coroner's report, Mr Smith was burning garden waste in a metal incinerator bin at the rear of his home. It is believed that a spark or ember from the fire landed on his trousers, which then caught alight.
Emergency response
Neighbours heard Mr Smith's cries for help and rushed to assist him. They found him with his trousers on fire and attempted to extinguish the flames. Paramedics were called to the scene and Mr Smith was airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham with severe burns to his lower body.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, Mr Smith died from his injuries on June 18, 2023, three days after the incident. The cause of death was given as burns and smoke inhalation.
Coroner's findings
Senior Coroner for Shropshire, John Ellery, recorded a conclusion of accidental death. He stated that Mr Smith had been an experienced gardener who had used the incinerator many times before without incident.
In a statement, Mr Smith's family paid tribute to him, describing him as a "much-loved father, grandfather and great-grandfather" who had dedicated his life to serving the community. They said: "He was a devoted family man who will be deeply missed by all who knew him."
West Midlands Police also expressed their condolences, noting Mr Smith's long service with the force before his retirement.
