Luxury car manufacturer Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has taken a proactive approach to road safety by funding the installation of two new Speed Indicator Devices in Westhampnett Parish Council.
Community Safety Initiative
The initiative forms part of the prestigious car brand's wider community engagement activities and long-term strategy to enhance traffic flow and safety on local roads. Andrew Ball, Head of Corporate Relations at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, emphasised the company's commitment to being a good neighbour ahead of the Christmas period.
"As the largest local employer, we inevitably have an impact on local traffic volumes, so we are especially keen to be involved in initiatives that support road safety and improved driver behaviour," Ball stated. "We were therefore delighted to be able to support Westhampnett Parish Council by funding two new Speed Indicator Devices at key locations."
How the Speed Monitoring System Works
The innovative solar-powered devices feature a unique visual feedback system for drivers. Vehicles travelling within the speed limit are greeted with a 'happy' face, while those exceeding the limit receive a 'sad' face display.
Beyond the immediate visual warnings, the sophisticated monitoring equipment collects comprehensive data including:
- Date and time of each vehicle passing
- Recorded speed of every vehicle
- Patterns of speeding behaviour
Police Enforcement and Data Sharing
Perhaps most significantly, the collected data will play a crucial role in planning future enforcement activities. The information gathered will be made available to police authorities to assist in coordinating speed checks and implementing appropriate traffic calming measures where necessary.
This collaboration between private enterprise and law enforcement represents a modern approach to road safety management. The devices are expected to make what Ball describes as "a lasting contribution to the safety and wellbeing of residents and our workforce alike."
The road safety announcement comes during the same week that Rolls-Royce revealed it is extending support for its 2025 House Charity, Dementia Support at Sage House, for a second year. This dual commitment to community welfare and road safety underscores the manufacturer's comprehensive approach to corporate social responsibility in its local area.
