West Midlands Police have been granted additional special powers to address a concerning series of serious criminal incidents in specific areas of Birmingham. The force has confirmed that Section 60 powers are now in effect, authorising officers to conduct stop and searches without the usual requirement for reasonable grounds.
Enhanced Police Presence and Powers
The implementation of these powers is a direct response to recent investigations into serious offences, which include a firearms discharge and a severe assault classified as a Section 18 wounding. These incidents occurred earlier in January, prompting the police to take decisive action to ensure public safety and prevent further violence.
In addition to the Section 60 authorisation, West Midlands Police have deployed extra officers to the affected neighbourhoods. This increased presence is intended to provide reassurance to residents and deter potential criminal activity during this period of heightened concern.
Geographic Scope and Duration
The special powers cover a defined area of Birmingham, encompassing Winson Green along with sections of Rotton Park and Brookfields. The designated zone extends from Handsworth Booth Street through to the Jewellery Quarter and Edgbaston village.
These enhanced police measures are scheduled to remain active from 7:00 PM on Saturday, January 31st, until 3:00 AM on Sunday, February 1st. During this eight-hour window, officers will exercise their expanded authority to maintain order and investigate suspicious behaviour.
Official Police Statement
A spokesperson for West Midlands Police explained the rationale behind the decision, stating: "We will be using Section 60 powers in parts of Birmingham this evening and overnight. These powers allow us to stop and search people without the need to have reasonable grounds. It follows recent serious incidents we're investigating, including a firearms discharge and Section 18 wounding earlier in January."
The spokesperson further emphasised: "As always, our main focus is on keeping everyone safe. We'll continue to have an increased presence in the area to offer reassurance to the local community."
This development underscores the police force's proactive approach to tackling serious crime and maintaining public security in Birmingham's communities. Residents are advised to cooperate with officers during this period of enhanced law enforcement activity.
