Family and Friends Mourn Teenager Zeeshan Afzal Stabbed Outside Smethwick Mosque
The friends and family of teenager Zeeshan Afzal, who tragically died outside a Smethwick mosque following Ramadan evening prayers, have expressed profound heartbreak over losing what they describe as the 'light in our lives'. The 18-year-old suffered fatal stab injuries during an altercation on Oldbury Road, Smethwick, on Friday night, February 20, just as worshippers were leaving Taraweeh prayers at Oldbury Jamia Masjid around 9pm.
Shocking Scene Witnessed by Friend
One friend, Rajab Arshad, recounted the harrowing moment he watched paramedics battle to save Zeeshan's life, mere minutes after they had prayed together inside the nearby mosque. 'It is just shocking, terrible. He had such a pure heart,' said Arshad, a student who had spent the evening with Zeeshan marking the first Friday of Ramadan. He had left the mosque slightly earlier and was at a friend's house when he received a call about the incident, rushing back to witness the chaotic scene where emergency services were working desperately.
Tributes Highlight Kindness and Devotion
In an online tribute, Zeeshan's family emphasized his positive impact, stating: 'His kindness, generosity, and laughter touched everyone who knew him. To lose him during Ramadan has been an indescribable pain.' They have set up a GoFundMe appeal in his memory, which has already raised more than £6,000. The family notes that Zeeshan was a devoted Muslim, regularly reciting the Quran with melodic skill and saving up for a Hajj pilgrimage planned in two months. Shortly before his death, he posted a heartfelt message remembering his late mother and her cooking.
Family Locked Down During Incident
Relatives of Zeeshan were among those inside the mosque when trouble erupted outside, leading to a 'lockdown' situation as police and paramedics rushed to the scene. Rajab Arshad, speaking with the family's blessing, wanted to dispel any negative assumptions circulating online, asserting: 'Nothing could be more wrong. He was a good lad, pure in heart. We are all grieving and praying for him.' He also urged young men to reconsider carrying knives, warning of dire consequences like death or imprisonment.
Fundraising for Continuous Charity
The GoFundMe appeal, established with direct family approval, references Zeeshan's deep devotion to Islam. The family writes: 'This Ramadan, a month of mercy, forgiveness, and immense reward, we were tested in the most heartbreaking way. Our beloved brother was tragically taken from us during this sacred month.' They aim to raise funds as sadaqah jariyah, or ongoing charity, to provide continuous reward for Zeeshan in the afterlife, aligning with Islamic teachings about deeds that persist after death.
Police Investigation Ongoing
During the incident, two other men, aged 19 and 22, were taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. The scene was sealed off for several hours as police launched an investigation. No arrests have been made yet, but officers are appealing for witnesses or anyone with mobile phone or dashcam footage to come forward. People can contact police by calling 101, quoting log number 4896 of February 20, or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 55511. Several bouquets have since been placed on the railings outside the mosque, symbolizing community grief and support.
