Police in Telford have arrested a 33-year-old man after a bus driver was assaulted and ejected from his vehicle, which was then driven into several cars before coming to a stop in the Madeley area. The incident unfolded on Friday, September 18, with officers called to Court Street at approximately 6.37pm following reports of an attack on a bus driver.
Armed officers respond within minutes
Armed officers were dispatched to the scene and arrived around 10 minutes after being alerted, according to West Mercia Police. Superintendent for local policing in Telford, Edward Hancox, said: "We understand how concerning this incident will have been for people in Madeley and the wider Telford community, and I want to reassure people that our enquiries are very much ongoing."
"Officers were on the scene, and had made the arrest, within 10 minutes of the first call being received. This included armed officers deploying from Malinsgate Police Station," he added. The suspect was arrested at the scene on suspicion of robbery and dangerous driving and remains in police custody.
Bus collides with vehicles on Park Way
A spokesperson for the force detailed the sequence of events: "At 6.37pm officers were called to reports of an assault involving a bus driver on Court Street in Madeley. During the assault the driver was ejected from the vehicle, before the bus was then driven along Park Way towards the High Street, where it collided with a number of vehicles before eventually coming to a stop."
Thankfully, the bus driver did not suffer serious injuries. The spokesperson confirmed: "The bus driver did not suffer serious injuries and was assessed by paramedics at the scene before being taken to hospital for further treatment."
Community assistance and ongoing investigation
Superintendent Hancox expressed gratitude for the public's response: "Thankfully, the bus driver did not suffer serious injuries, and I'd like to thank those members of the public who came to the driver's aid and offered their help and support following what was understandably a distressing incident. The care and concern shown by the community has been greatly appreciated."
Police are reviewing footage and information already submitted by witnesses. Hancox said: "We're also very grateful to everyone who has already come forward with information or sent us footage. We are reviewing the material we have received as part of our enquiries, but we would still encourage anyone with footage or information who hasn't yet spoken to us to please get in touch."
