Travellers pitch up on three Birmingham sites as police issue statement
Travellers on three Birmingham sites as police respond

Unauthorised traveller encampments have appeared at three separate locations across Birmingham, prompting a response from West Midlands Police. The sites include land near Middlemore Road in Northfield, a spot close to the Asda Superstore in Barnes Hill, and an area near Chinn Brook Recreation Ground in Yardley.

Video footage captured by BirminghamLive at Chinn Brook Recreation Ground on the afternoon of August 18 showed approximately half a dozen caravans, accompanied by a horsebox and several horses. Numerous vehicles were also present, with the caravans towed onto the field near Trittiford Mill Park.

Police and council response

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police stated: "We're aware of travellers on land near Middlemore Road, Northfield, and we are working with our partners to resolve the situation." The force's comments came after the encampments were reported.

Birmingham City Council, which previously responded to a separate unauthorised encampment, reiterated its position: "The council is committed to actively protecting its land. We will take steps to recover this land where unauthorised encampments encroach upon it. We have useable transit sites and plots for use by the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community - which is in line with Government policy."

Local concerns and impact

Residents near the Northfield site expressed alarm over the large convoy, which consisted of dozens of caravans. One local claimed: "They had fires lit during the night as we could smell it. It's really irresponsible and putting us all in danger." Another added: "It's putting people's lives in danger. Look at what just happened in Stourbridge."

The council also pointed to the Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessment, carried out and updated in 2019, details of which are available on its website. The assessment outlines the provision of transit sites and plots for the community.

As of the latest reports, the encampments remain in place, with police and council officials continuing to work together to address the situation.
