Fire safety authorities across the United Kingdom have issued an urgent warning to households with electric bicycles, highlighting a critical instruction that could prevent devastating fires. The alert follows a specific incident in West Sussex that exposed the severe risks associated with certain e-bike components.

Fire crews in West Sussex responded to a concerning incident on Monday, January 12, at Church Green in Shoreham. A small fire in the open was traced back to a lithium-ion battery from an e-bike conversion kit that had entered thermal runaway, causing it to ignite unexpectedly. This event has catalysed a broader safety campaign.
Crew Commander Mike Wattam emphasised the growing popularity of e-bike conversion kits but warned of the serious fire hazards they can pose. "When incompatible batteries and chargers are used together, the risk increases significantly," he stated, underscoring the need for vigilance.
Expert Advice on Safe E-Bike Practices
Station Manager Darren Wickings, who chairs the lithium-ion safety group LIBERATE, provided detailed guidance for e-bike owners. "E-bike conversions should only be undertaken by qualified professionals," he advised. "It is essential to always follow the manufacturer's instructions meticulously and avoid any attempts to modify or tamper with the battery, charger, or motor independently."
He further outlined crucial charging protocols:
- Always use the correct charger specifically designed for your batteries.
- Charge batteries on a flat, solid, and stable surface to prevent accidents.
- Never leave batteries charging unattended or overnight, as this can lead to overheating.
London Fire Brigade Reports Record E-Bike Fires
London Fire Commissioner Jonathan Smith revealed that the capital has experienced a record number of fires caused by e-bikes or e-scooters. "We urge all Londoners to exercise extreme caution when purchasing these items," he said. "The consequences of these fires are devastating—they are rapid, explosive, toxic, and can be fatal."
Commissioner Smith warned that consumers might unknowingly purchase faulty, damaged, or incompatible products, thereby endangering themselves and those around them.

Jules Pipe, Deputy Mayor for the Fire Service in London, echoed these concerns, urging potential buyers to reconsider purchasing e-bikes or conversion kits from online marketplaces. "I encourage everyone to shop with reputable retailers," he shared. "If a deal appears too good to be true, it likely is and could pose extreme dangers."
He affirmed ongoing support for the London Fire Brigade's efforts to enhance e-bike safety, strengthen regulations, and raise public awareness about the risks.
