Voyeur Who Spied on Women in Their Homes Gets 14-Year Prison Sentence
A convicted sex offender who broke into homes in West Bridgford and spied on women as they changed or bathed has been handed a 14-year jail term. Tyler Reilly, 32, was caught on CCTV peering through windows and entering properties without permission, leaving his victims terrified and traumatized.
Details of the Disturbing Crimes
Nottingham Crown Court heard that Reilly's crimes occurred last summer in West Bridgford. In one incident, a 25-year-old woman was undressing in her bedroom when she spotted a flash from the window in her back garden. Her husband checked CCTV footage and discovered Reilly on their property, with the light from his phone illuminating his face as he peered inside.
In a separate offense, an 89-year-old woman entered her bedroom just before midnight on June 14 to find Reilly standing beside her wardrobe. He told her not to scream and claimed he was being chased, leading her to give him a drink and chocolate. She later said she remained calm by thinking of how the late Queen reacted when she found an intruder in her room.
The final incident involved an 85-year-old woman who was bathing at home when Reilly entered uninvited and pulled back the shower curtain. He was apprehended while living in a tent in the Lady Bay and West Bridgford area.
Judge's Stern Remarks and Sentencing
Judge Stuart Rafferty KC handed down the sentence, stating that Reilly's difficult childhood and lack of fulfillment were no excuse for his actions. "It is perfectly clear that, homeless as you were in West Bridgford, you were making it your business either to burgle, spy on people, or commit sexual offenses," he said. "Only you will know what sexual gratification you got from committing them."
The judge rejected Reilly's claim that he returned to apologize to the 89-year-old victim, asserting that he intended to make her another victim of his sexual proclivities. "For each of the women you violated by going into their private space, their lives will never be the same again," Judge Rafferty added. "They will never feel safe in their homes again but you did not think of that."
Impact on the Victims
The victims have been left with lasting psychological scars. The younger voyeurism victim stated in a victim impact statement that she felt violated and determined to harm her, leading her to request relocation away from Nottingham and start therapy for anxiety attacks. She now constantly checks her home's perimeter and watches for followers.
The 89-year-old victim expressed that the incident was terrifying and she always wonders if someone is watching her. The second voyeurism victim said the break-in left her scared it would happen again and she no longer feels safe in her home.
Reilly's Background and Mitigation
Reilly, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to two counts of trespass with intent to commit voyeurism, burglary, and breaching the sex offender register. He has 19 previous convictions for 42 offenses, including a 2015 conviction for sexually assaulting an elderly, vulnerable woman in her home, which resulted in a 10-year sentence.
In mitigation, Sue Rodham said Reilly's best defense was his guilty pleas and highlighted his difficult childhood, being abandoned at age five and in and out of care. He committed his first offense at five and received his first prison sentence at 13. Rodham noted that Reilly would love to have a family but feels hopeless.
Sentence Details and Future Restrictions
The 14-year sentence comprises eight years of immediate custody and a six-year extended licence. Reilly will not be eligible to apply for parole until he has served two-thirds of the custodial term. Additionally, he will remain on the sex offender register for life and was given three 10-year restraining orders.
During police interviews, Reilly stated, "this is what happens when you let a sex offender out of prison with no help," underscoring the systemic issues surrounding rehabilitation and support for offenders.
