Walsall Father Sentenced to Life for Murdering Newborn Daughter

Sean Jefferson, a 35-year-old man from Walsall, has been handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 22 years for the murder of his five-week-old daughter, Darcy-Leigh Jefferson. The tragic case, heard at Stafford Crown Court, revealed that the premature infant endured horrific injuries, including 47 rib fractures, broken bones in both legs, and a catastrophic brain injury, inflicted during three separate violent attacks by her father.

Severe Injuries Compared to High-Speed Crash

Medical professionals described Darcy-Leigh's injuries as so severe that they were akin to those sustained in a high-speed head-on collision or a fall from a second-storey window. The court heard how Jefferson repeatedly lost his temper with the tiny baby, prioritizing his need for cannabis over caring for his partner and child. Mrs Justice Brunner KC, presiding over the case, condemned Jefferson's actions, stating he must have known his daughter was injured and in pain but did nothing to help.

Fatal Attack and False Narrative

The fatal incident occurred on March 27, when Jefferson squeezed and shook Darcy-Leigh with such force that she screamed before losing consciousness. Throughout the four-year legal process, Jefferson maintained a false narrative and never admitted his guilt. In addition, the baby's mother, Amy Clark, 34, was sentenced to seven years in prison for causing or allowing the death of a child.

Mrs Justice Brunner emphasized the gravity of the crime, noting that Jefferson had deprived Darcy-Leigh of her life and others of the opportunity to know and share in her life. This case highlights a devastating failure in parental duty and has shocked the local community.
