Walsall rapist jailed for 30-year sentence

Decades of Abuse Culminate in Near-Fatal Attack

A violent offender from Walsall has been handed a 30-year prison sentence for a horrific campaign of abuse that culminated in an attempted murder and rape. Gurwinder Singh, aged 36, subjected his victim to years of sustained physical and psychological torment before the near-fatal assault in May of last year.

The Night of the Attack

On 6 May last year, the abuse escalated dramatically. Singh forced his way into the woman's home armed with a knife and explicitly threatened to kill her. He then proceeded to stab her multiple times in her arm, chest, and stomach. Following the stabbing, he undressed and raped her, repeatedly issuing death threats throughout the prolonged ordeal.

Police were called to the address and arrested Singh shortly after the attack. He was initially held on suspicion of offences including attempted murder and rape.

Justice Served at Stafford Crown Court

Singh, from Walsall, was found guilty following a trial earlier this year and was sentenced at Stafford Crown Court. The court heard that it was merely a matter of millimetres and sheer luck that the victim did not die from her injuries.

Detective Sergeant Chloe Collins, who led the investigation, stated that the 30-year sentence reflected the severity of Singh's long-term violent behaviour. She praised the incredible courage and resilience of the victim, whose strength was instrumental in securing the conviction. DS Collins described Singh as a "very dangerous and controlling man" and confirmed he is now rightly behind bars for a long time.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police reiterated the force's commitment to tackling violence against women and girls, stating it is a top priority. They emphasised that specialist units are trained to handle such cases with sensitivity and effectiveness, and they encouraged anyone experiencing domestic abuse to come forward.
