Woman Recovers Eight-Day-Old Baby from Overturned Car on M50
Woman Finds Eight-Day-Old Baby in M50 Crash

A Birmingham woman has described the harrowing moment she discovered an eight-day-old baby trapped inside an overturned car on the M50 motorway.

Kirsty Johnson was returning home to Birmingham after a holiday when her family spotted a collision involving a vehicle that had flipped onto its roof. The incident occurred between junction one and junction two of the M50, near the border between Worcestershire and Gloucestershire, at approximately 6:15 am on Monday, May 26.

Kirsty stated: "Straight away we panicked and pulled up on the hard shoulder. I called emergency services. The vehicle was completely upside down and the barrier to the motorway was completely off, as well."

While on the phone to 999, Kirsty heard people shout that there was a baby in the car. The infant did not make a sound for two minutes, Kirsty said, but eventually started screaming, which she described as "such a relief," as reported by the BBC.

Kirsty explained that her partner and a man named Jamie found the baby beneath the windscreen. She said: "Although it was already horrific to see, my heart just dropped. About two minutes later, they're being lifted out the car and my partner is holding this little baby in a pink baby grow. And it wasn't crying for about two minutes. It wasn't crying at all, so as you can imagine my heart was just... it was awful. But a couple of minutes later the baby started screaming so that was such a relief."

Reflecting on the rest of the day, Kirsty said: "Horrible. It's a vision I would not wish anyone to see. The baby was the smallest thing I've ever seen, it was tiny. Seeing the baby come out the car the way it was, it was horrible. It's a vision that I think you will just not ever forget."

West Mercia Police confirmed that a 37-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving. A force spokesperson stated that the baby was taken to Birmingham Children's Hospital, while a woman in her 30s was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
