A woman who kicked two police officers at West Bromwich Police Station after being told her case would not be reopened has been ordered to pay £120 compensation.
Jinder Dhariwal, 58, of Bronte Avenue, Milton Keynes, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker at Dudley Magistrates' Court on September 10. The incident occurred on April 3, 2022.
Aggression from the outset
Dhariwal had gone to the police station hoping to reopen a case regarding an alleged assault. However, officers in the front office were met with 'aggression from the offset', which escalated when they told her they could not fulfil her request.
The court heard that Dhariwal said 'if you touch me, you are going to get it' as she 'clenched her fists'. The prosecutor said: "She was pushed back onto the counter and she kicked two officers in the leg."
Apology and explanation
In interview, Dhariwal was apologetic and told officers her behaviour was due to a diagnosis of bipolar and upset that the case was given no further action by the Crown Prosecution Service.
A statement from one of the injured officers was read out to the court, which said: "We tried to talk to the defendant, however we were met by swearing, name calling and eventually an assault, where we were both kicked. Thankfully the injury was minor, however given the level of aggression from the offset, this could have been very different."
Remorse and sentencing
During the hearing, Dhariwal's legal representative said she had been 'quite upset' when she went to the police station due to the CPS decision to take no further action after she was allegedly assaulted, but accepted it was 'not an excuse'.
She continued: "While not pleasant, it was a low-level assault. One officer pushed her onto the counter. She knows she should not have acted in that way and she is remorseful and has apologised for her actions."
Magistrates ordered Dhariwal to pay £120 compensation, with £60 awarded to each officer.
