The site of Bury Parish Church boasts a deep historical lineage, with the first building believed to date back to 971 AD, likely a wooden, thatched structure established during King Edgar's creation of parishes. Over the centuries, the church has undergone several transformations. A Gothic-style church was constructed in 1585, followed by a major reconstruction of the main building between 1773 and 1780, which preserved the original spire. This spire was later replaced in 1842.
By 1870, deterioration of the wooden framework necessitated the construction of the current building, designed by architect J. S. Crowther. It opened on Candlemas Day in 1876, incorporating the 1842 spire, and has stood as a landmark ever since.
