Alum Rock Food Court Protests Continue Over Lack of Planning Permission
Alum Rock Food Court Protests Continue Over Permission

Further protests are being planned by angry residents in Alum Rock against a food court that is operating without planning permission. The 'Rock Park' on Adderley Road has around 14 fast food vendors, which opened over the weekend, sparking significant outcry from the local community.

Council Confirms No Permission

Birmingham City Council has confirmed that there is no current valid planning permission in place to change the area’s use into a food court. They acknowledged the concerns raised by residents and stated that planning investigations are ongoing.

Community Response

Newly elected Councillor Nosheen Khalid met with the site owners, who closed the park prior to a peaceful protest on Monday evening. Despite local objections and the lack of permission, trading has reportedly continued. Resident Tahir Aslam, who once played cricket at the site, demanded that a stop notice be enforced. He said: "They have disregard for the community and do not want to follow due process. We want a stop notice."

Upcoming Protests

Further protests are planned for Friday and Saturday evenings. The council stated on Wednesday, May 13 that they are aware of the operational development and its continued use, and investigations are ongoing. Earlier in the week, the council had expressed understanding of the disruption caused to the local community and confirmed regular contact with the site operator, local members, and residents.
